Weathering a Risky Climate: New Policy Report Launched by RESULTS UK

4 May 2016

Habyarabatuma, a smallholder farmer who lives with his wife and four children in Kamonyi, southern Rwanda, grows maize on a 2.5-acre plot. He used to worry every time the growing season came around. He worried about the rains. If they didn’t come, and the crops failed, would he be forced to sell the family’s goats again just to see them through until the next season? It was a precarious livelihood.

Putting Immunisation at the Heart of Health Systems

29 April 2016

Vaccines work. 2 to 3 million lives are saved every year through immunisation. That’s pretty extraordinary in itself, right? In fact, it almost seems that this blog could end here with that up-beat, celebratory sentence - 2 to 3 million lives are saved every year. But immunisation is actually much more than saving lives. As our new policy...

Universal Immunisation Coverage: Further, Faster, Fairer

27 April 2016

This blog is written jointly by Amy Whalley, Head of Policy Advocacy, RESULTS UK and Simon Wright, Head of Child Survival, Save the Children. It was originally posted on vaccineswork.org

18.7 million children around the world are still missing out on basic immunisation. That’s 18.7 million children put at unnecessary risk from preventable disease and infections, mostly because of where they happen to be born...

Why Immunisation?

25 April 2016

There are seven global health days specified by the WHO dedicated to raising awareness of specific global health issues. However, one issue has been dedicated a whole week. Immunisation.

As I see it, there couldn’t be a better occasion for me to publish my first blog for the new RESULTS UK website than World Immunisation Week.

Immunisation is one of RESULTS UK’s core issues as part of our goal of improving global health, especially for the poorest and most marginalised...

RESULTS kicks off Risky Business campaign with a packed event in Parliament

1 March 2016

By Catherine Blampied, Policy Advocacy Officer “Insurance is just a tool; the point is people” tweeted one attendee at RESULTS UK’s event on climate risk insurance in Parliament last week, where we got our Risky Business campaign off to a flying start. And that’s exactly the point behind our new campaign focused on empowering smallholder farmers – some of the world’s most vulnerable people – to protect...

Without education, who will bring peace?

12 February 2016

‘Without education, who will bring peace?’ This pertinent question posed by Mezon al-Melihan, a 17-year-old Syrian refugee, at last week’s Syria Donor Conference offers the clearest summary for the importance of education spending.

The Conference brought together world leaders to raise the money needed to help the millions of people affected by the conflict in Syria. Co-hosted by the UK, Germany, Kuwait, Norway and the UN, donors...

Guest blog: Every Last Child screening in Norwich

5 February 2016

This guest blog comes from Paul McConnell from our Norwich group who will be hosting a screening of 'Every Last Child' and panel event on Saturday 6th February. “Just after I spoke to Abi we sat down outside the bank. I sat alone. A man made his way toward me. Like others I had seen he could not walk. His legs were no more than bones and he moved himself around with hands. Wearing sandals on his hands. He was the picture of hopeless destitution. He spoke to me in Swahili. I...

Is positive discrimination the best solution to an unequal society?

1 February 2016

Last week I took part in a debate in the Oxford Union. Not having been at Oxford University myself, this was a pretty amazing experience. Drinks, dinner, photos and finally the debate… We entered a packed chamber, surrounded by busts of past debaters, such as Gladstone, Roy Jenkins, Michael Heseltine and Edward Heath.

The motion was ‘This house believes positive discrimination is the best solution to an unequal society’ and I...

Climate change is “biggest global risk”, but our humanitarian response is “too important to fail”: two major new reports

22 January 2016

Every year, as thousands of business and political leaders prepare to descend on the mountain resort of Davos in Switzerland to attempt to solve some of the world’s biggest problems, the World Economic Forum publishes its Global Risks Report . The annual report highlights the most significant threats to the world’s economy and society, and how they could evolve and interact...
