Last Post from the Summit - Good pledges but Children can't wait

8 June 2013

Its all over bar the counting...

The numbers came in a rush at the end. Euros, dollars, pounds. New money and old money. Some for one year, others are a seven year pledge. Big numbers for a big problem.

Justine Greening from DFID took the stage and announced an additional £375m in core funding, and £280m of matched funds from 2013 to 2020. A group of technical people are now in a huddle trying to work out what other pledes are new or old, ‘catalytic’ or guaranteed. Ms...

Live blog from the Nutrition Summit - Waiting for the Big Beasts

8 June 2013

The last big pledges of the day are still expected, here in UNILEVER house in the heart of London.

The World Bank and the EC are ‘big beasts’ in the development world but even they cannot fill the funding needs identified to combat undernutrition. According to the Lancet, around $9.5 billion is needed annually to role out a package of ten proven interventions. Will those funds be forthcoming?

The EU development commissioner, Andris Piebalgs, said: "I find it incomprehensible...

Live blog from Nutrition Summit - Major World Bank pledge

The big pledge from the World Bank is that they...

The EC has just made a huge pledge - of Euro 3.5 billion over the next 7 years. We need to find out the details, and a full review of the pledge will happen next week by RESULTS partners in Brussels. But what is clear is that this is a major pledge. Andris Piebalgs, from the European Community, said "This is a contribution from all the citizens of Europe, not just from governments but from everyone on the continent".

But how can the new funds be spent - can good outcomes be achieved...

8 June 2013

Jamie-Cooper Hohn from CIFF, a major Children's Foundation, just spoke, followed by President of Malawi Joyce Banda. “New findings in the Lancet have shown the stunning fact that undernutrition is the underlying cause of 45% of child deaths…. The world will never achieve MDGs 4 and 5 without increased investment against undernutrition”. She continued the theme of economic growth begun by PM David Cameron, saying how countries such as Nigeria and India are losing around 10% of economic growth...

Live blog from the Nutrition Summit 10am

8 June 2013

Angelique Kidjo, Africa's great musician, and David Cameron have been early speakers at the Summit. David Cameron explained why investment against undernutrition is so important – improved nutrition not only aids the growth of an individual, but also the growth of a country. A country which still has high rates of undernutrition may suffer from an annual loss of up to 10% GDP annually. Prime Minister Cameron also surprised many in the room by saying "I am immensely proud of the IF campaign...
